- Offer efficient and eco-friendly solutions for waste management
- Build cleaner, greener, and more sustainable communities
Environmental Consequences
Because of the different stages of production and disposal, textile waste presents a complex danger to ecosystems around the world. Deforestation for cotton production upsets ecological equilibrium and robs ecosystems of essential biodiversity. Furthermore, the use of hazardous chemicals in dyeing processes soil and water sources, harming aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Additionally, the buildup of textile waste in landfills releases toxic gases and that worsen environmental pollution and put wildlife in jeopardy. The rapid spread of textile waste highlights the pressing need for long-term fixes to lessen its damaging effects on ecosystems and protect biodiversity.
Ecosystems, and Natural Resources
Key Impacts of Textile Waste
While landfills in the U.S. are designed in theory to capture and contain landfill gasses that emerge during the decomposition process, numerous health concerns have been reported by people living near landfill sites.
Landfill Overflow
Resource Wastage
Discarded garments waste precious water, energy, and raw materials used in their production.
Biodiversity Loss
Deforestation for cotton production and harmful dyes degrade ecosystems and threaten wildlife.
Textile Waste
Every year, people in the United States throw out more than 34 billion pounds of used textiles. Divided across the population, that’s more than 100 pounds of textile waste per person each year. Once textiles are discarded, 66% of them are sent to landfills in the U.S. where they decompose — some quickly and others over hundreds of years. While landfills in the U.S. are designed in theory to capture and contain landfill gasses that emerge during the decomposition process, numerous health concerns have been reported by people living near landfill sites.
